Anderson calls for Basque prisoner release

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson met members of a Basque youth committee in Belfast today to discuss concerns over the conditions in which imprisoned Basques are being held.

Speaking after the meeting, Ms Anderson said;

“I met with members of a Basque youth committee campaigning on behalf of Basque prisoners being held in Spanish jails.

“In many cases these prisoners are being held hundreds of miles away from their homes and families.

“As a former political prisoner who spent more than 13 years in English jails I could fully empathise with the plight of these prisoners.

“Not only is the continued imprisonment of Basque prisoners an unnecessary obstacle to progress in the Basque peace process, detaining them so far from their homes created huge practical difficulties for the prisoners and their families.

“I repeat the call for the release of the remaining Basque prisoners in order to create confidence in the Basque peace process and will continue to support that process in the European Parliament.”
